Open-Xchange Server Edition Maintenance Announcements oxse-announce at open-xchange.com
Mon Mar 14 14:36:13 CET 2011

Dear Customers of Open-Xchange,

this is a developer preview of Open-Xchange Server 6 (OX6), major release v6.20. The release is available for all Open-Xchange development partners and all customers with a valid Open-Xchange license. Unstable preview packages will have version numbers like v6.19.-RevX until the first release candidates are available.

The Open-Xchange preview server https://www.ox.io/ gives you access to the latest developer version, and shows you in advance all the new features you can expect with the next software release. With this possibility, it isn't necessary to install the Open-Xchange Server.

Warning: This is a non-stable developer preview version of a future release and meant for reviewing projected API changes. It is not feature-complete and not ready for productive environments.

Please note:

- For authentications against external services, Open-Xchange has now implemented OAuth, and OAuth will be used whenever a service supports it. Most likely OAuth will become the industry standard for authentication of external services and several services already support it: e.g. LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. Using OAuth has several advantages compared to existing implementations used in the Open-Xchange user interface: With the new authentication method, users only need to authorize once to an external social service. After the initial authentication has been done, all additional updates can then be performed without having to login again (well, at least as long as the credentials at the external service remain unchanged). After the update to the new Open-Xchange major version, users will need setup their Facebook® and LinkedIn® subscriptions once more.

- Open-Xchange Discontinues Support of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (SLES10) - as you may know, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (SLES10) has been superseded by SLES11. Open-Xchange has discontinued support of SLES10, though will continue to fix bugs in the category "blockers" and "critical" for SLES10 until the major release OX6 v6.20. Starting with the next release OX6 v6.22 (mid of 2011), Open-Xchange Server will support SLES 11 and all other official supported operating systems like Debian 5.0, 6.0, RHEL5 and RHEL6. As users of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server10, we encourage you to update to the latest operating system version. Severe flaws of Java 5, potentially allowing denial-of-service attacks (DoS) have been addressed with Java 6 and thus with SLES11.

- Open-Xchange Discontinue Support of the outdated Java 5, though we will continue to fix bugs in the category "blockers" and "critical" for Java 5 until major release v.6.18.2 Starting with the next releases, Open-Xchange Server only supports Java 6. As users of Java 5, we encourage you to update latest Java version.

This release provides various improvements to the user interface including design changes, usability improvements, new features, and bug fixes. Highlights in this release are:
- New Languages: Italian language support; Language support for Simplified Chinese; Japanese language support includes Kana-based sort orders, selection and search
- Support of additional platforms: Debian 6; CentOS v5.5; Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 6 (RHEL6)
- Calendar and calendar team view improvements: User can hide non-working times in team view; Order of appointments on z-index in team view
- Mail module improvements: User can define the time frame for vacation notices; User can mark mails as read for a whole folder
- General improvements of the user front-end: Redesigned start page; Embedded edit- and new-windows; User can choose between a full panel with intuitive icons or a space saving one-line panel
